When to choose a cast iron pot

Pots and pans made from this material are perfect for preparing foods that require slow and uniform cooking , such as meat, fish and vegetables. However, cast iron is versatile enough to lend itself to other types of preparations as well. For example:

  • a cast iron pot with high edges is perfect for cooking roasts ;
  • a pan can lend itself very well to cooking in the oven ;
  • a cast iron pan can be used to grill different types of food.

The advantages of cast iron in the kitchen

These particular types of pans retain heat optimally and spread it slowly, distributing it evenly. Thanks to its properties, cast iron pots allow you to turn off the stove in advance and finish cooking food with the heat off , also allowing for energy savings .

Another great advantage is that cast iron pans can be used on all hobs, including induction hobs (cast iron is in fact a ferrous alloy made up mainly of iron and carbon).

In addition, cast iron pots allow you to bring color to your kitchen, choosing the vibrant colors of enamelled cast iron or more traditional colours.

Cast iron pots: use and maintenance

Unlike pots and pans made of other more classic materials, with cast iron it takes some time to reach the desired temperature. Once heated properly, however, they release heat and cook food even with the fire off .

For optimal conservation, we recommend using only wooden or silicone utensils to avoid scratching the surface.

Equally important is the cleanliness of cast iron cookware . First of all, you have to wait for the pot or pan to cool naturally before washing it, in order to avoid thermal shocks which could affect its performance.

Subsequently, it is necessary to remove the food residues (without scratching with abrasive sponges or pointed utensils) and wash the pan by hand with hot water . If possible, it's best to avoid dish soap; should there be burnt food residues, we recommend placing the pan or saucepan on the heat with a little water until the dirt comes off spontaneously.

Once washed, dry thoroughly and spread a light layer of olive, seed or coconut oil on the cooking surface and externally, then rub with kitchen paper to remove any residue.
